Hi friends,
Today is the post will show you how to add -ed in the correct way. I know you (or your students) have got confused when adding -ed to the verb, you don't know the spelling rules you have learned is correct or not. There are lots of English sources on the internet you can take a look, but you think it's not enough, some have this rule but some do not. My students have the same problem. So I decided to make the grammar sheet of Past Simple and Past Participle Spelling Rules.
There are 4 rules you have to remember when adding ed to the verb:
1. When the verbs end in "e" => add "d"
Eg: arrive => arrived ; realize => realized
2. When the verbs end in consonant + "y" => omit "y" then add "ied"
Eg: try => tried ; study => studied
3. When the verbs end in consonant 1 + vowel + consonant 2 (excludes w, x, y) => double the consonant 2 then add "ed"
* Note: do not use this rule for a two-syllable verb when the stress is on the first syllable
Eg: prefer (/prɪˈfɝː/) => preferred but happen /ˈhæp.ən/ => happened
4. When the verbs end in consonant + vowel + "l" => add "led" (US) or add "ed" (UK)
Eg: travel => travelled (US) or traveled (UK)

I also include the examples and exercises for you (or your students) to practice and use these spelling rules in the right way. You can check the answer key on page 2.
Hope this worksheet can help you to learn English with effortless. Share if you think it's helpful.
